March 22, taxi drivers around the world celebrate their professional holiday – International Taxi Driver Day.<\/h1>\n

It was on this day in 1907 that the first cars equipped with special meters appeared on the streets of London. London cabbies called the counter “taximeter” – from the French “tax” (“fee”), and the Greek “metron” (“measurement”). Since then, individual urban transport began to be called taxis, and cabbies – taxi drivers.
\nIn 1907, motorized “cabs” with meters, now called “taximeters”, in London became the first taxis in their modern sense. The first London taxi cars were green and red. The yellow color that we consider traditional for these machines came about with the light hand of John Hertz, founder of the Hertz Corporation.
\nAccepting old cars as payment for new ones, an enterprising American repainted used cars yellow and used them as taxis. Naturally, such bright cars were easy to notice on the streets of the city. Later, the practice of repainting taxis yellow was adopted by almost all such companies, and yellow became the classic color of taxis for the whole world.<\/p>\n

Another recognizable symbol of a taxi is a checkered pattern. According to one version, the first checkered pattern appeared in the 20s of the last century on the cars of an American company that borrowed them from racing symbols. He was supposed to attract the attention of customers and push them to think about the speed of movement.
\nMeanwhile the history of the word chauffeur begins in 1896, when it was formed from the French phrase for “stoker,” because railroads and sea boats were powered by steam and required the driver to stoke the engine. By 1902, the first vehicles, like their predecessors, were powered by steam. This is the first nod to a professional automobile driver.<\/p>\n
