Wimbledon Looks Ahead as Centre Court Marks 100 Years
Wimbledon is an international tennis tournament, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, since 1877, holding most of its matches on the grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club
The All England Lawn Tennis Club announced preparations for the 135th staging of The Championships, which would include a centennial celebration of Centre Court in its current location as well as a look ahead to the next 100 years of the tournament.
Furthermore, the All England Club will commemorate two other special occasions at The Championships: Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, for which we are collaborating with the World Platinum Investment Council to create two bespoke platinum coins to be used for the Finals Weekend coin tosses, and the BBC’s 100th anniversary, with whom we have a 95-year relationship.
The Championships 2022 campaign, with the theme ‘The Stage Awaits’ and a centennial logo, will start in the week after Roland-Garros, building anticipation for this year’s Championships by anticipating what the next 100 years of Centre Court may bring.
To commemorate the occasion, the Centre Court bowl has been updated, featuring a new central entrance for players walking on court.
This year, the Wimbledon Foundation requested local borough people to select an inspiring young person to do the pre-match coin toss at this year’s Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Finals.
The Foundation has also been involved in responding to the Ukraine situation. A £100,000 donation was made to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal; a £50,000 donation was made to the DEC’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal; and a £20,000 donation was made locally to Association for Polish Family, an existing charity partner, who has been collecting essentials to support the tens of thousands of Ukrainians crossing the Polish border.
