WestJet introduces seasonal Amsterdam’s route, and also resumes services to London Gatwick.
Canada’s WestJet is expanding its international network to include Amsterdam, the largest city in the Netherlands, as well as resuming service to London Gatwick (LGW).
A 320-seat Boeing 787-9 aircraft will start flights between the airline’s Calgary (YYC) hub and Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) on August 5. The route will run twice a week at first, then three times a week starting September 9. The schedule is in effect until November 1st.
WestJet CCO John Weatherill said the carrier was committed to “putting international investments in place” to support the recovery of Canada’s economy. With flights set to begin later this summer, we look forward to helping connect Canadians to their loved ones in Europe, while continuing to provide affordable options for those who want to visit or reconnect with friends and family across our great country.”
The new service is designed to allow for late-day departures and daytime arrivals on transatlantic flights departing from Calgary to Amsterdam. Although WestJet is not a member of an airline alliance, it has a collaboration with KLM, which will allow it to provide onward connections to European destinations.
WestJet plans to return to London on July 5th, in addition to adding Amsterdam to its route map. From YYC, a 2X-weekly service will be available to LGW, while a 3X-weekly service will be available from Toronto (YYZ).
To control the spread of COVID-19, Canada maintains strong border controls, with most foreign nationals forbidden to enter the country. However, on June 9, the country took a cautious first move toward lifting border restrictions, announcing that it would begin relaxing quarantine measures for fully vaccinated citizens in early July.
