The London Resort’s gigantic theme park, called the “UK Disneyland,” has been canceled.
In a statement issued, the business behind the £3.5 billion theme park development confirmed the news.
The location in South-East England is the size of 136 Wembley stadiums and would be located across the Thames on the Swanscombe Peninsula in Kent.
It was scheduled to open to the public in 2025, but the theme park’s future has been called into question following a statement by London Resort’s CEO on Thursday.
PY Gerbeau stated that one of the factors driving the decision was the introduction of Freeport status in Tilbury.
“In the best interests of the London Resort, we are withdrawing the existing proposal; as a result of Tilbury being classified as a Freeport, which has meant adjustments are necessary in shifting the ferry terminus from Tilbury to Grays,” PY Gerbeau said. On this issue, we are partnering and working closely with Thurrock Council.
“This difficulty, along with Natural England’s decision to designate a brownfield polluted site as an SSSI, has had an impact on the project.” As a result of our mitigation approach and our promise to spend £150 million on environmental improvements on the peninsula, we have acquired large land holdings.
“These modifications are deemed substantial and, as such, need removal and resubmission. We have frequently petitioned the Examining Authority and the Planning Inspectorate for latitude, extensions of time, and, of course, understanding.”
It is understood that the theme park’s creators are currently working with the appropriate groups and plan to renew their application later this year.
“We will continue our contact with the local community, statutory bodies, landowners, and others to ensure we can achieve as many agreements as possible before resubmission,” Mr Gerbeau continued. Make no mistake, we are fully dedicated to this incredible project, and we will resubmit before the end of 2022, looking forward to providing a world-class entertainment resort – the UK deserves better, and we will make it happen!”
