James Dyson topped the list of the richest residents of Great Britain
A list of the richest people in the UK for 2020 was published this weekend. The Sunday Times, which published this list, also said that the most.
Britain’s wealthy people lost tens of billions of pounds as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, as their combined annual fortune declined for the first time in a decade. The newspaper, which has published an authoritative annual ranking of the country’s 1000 richest people since 1989, has discovered that over the past two months, the super-rich have lost 54 billion pounds.More than half of the billionaires in Britain are faced with a drop in their value, which is an unprecedented indicator.Inventor and designer James Dyson was the only one who did not encounter this trend and took first place in the ranking with a valuation of £ 16.2 billion.According to the Sunday Times, he climbed to first place from fifth place in 2019, not so much due to the growth of his business, but due to a decrease in the size of the fortunes of other billionaires from the top 10.The Hinduj brothers, who led the list last year with a fortune of £ 22 billion, lost £ 6 billion as a result of the crisis – and now together are in second place with entrepreneurs David and Simon Ruben.Jim Ratcliffe, the head of the petrochemical company Ineos, which headed the rating in 2018, also lost 6 billion pounds and his fortune amounted to 12.15 billion pounds.Steel baron Lakshmi Mittal lost almost 4 billion pounds, which put him in 19th place with a value of 6.78 billion pounds. In general, according to the 2020 list, the total wealth of British super-rich people amounted to 743 billion pounds, which is 29 billion pounds less than last year. The total number of British billionaires has decreased by four to 147, but London remains the world capital of billionaires, as 89 billionaires were born, live or hold a significant part of their assets in the city.
According to the Sunday Times, many British billionaires, despite their fortunes, are very tight-fisted and do not hesitate to apply for subsidies to the state. So, according to the journalists of this publication, at least 63 people involved in the list of the richest people in Great Britain, including 20 billionaires, sought to use the state program, which provides for the payment of up to 80 percent of their salaries to 2500 pounds per month during a crisis.
These include Londoners Sri and Gopi Hinduja, owners of a large group of Hinduja companies that have laid off about 360 employees at their Optare bus company based in northern England.
Ratcliffe is a co-owner of The Pig hotel chain, which has also laid off most of its staff. He also asks the government for an emergency loan to develop a joint venture Ineos, opened with the Chinese state PetroChina.
