Buckingham Palace introduces its own sloe gin made with Eastern European berries.
Sloe gin is a quintessentially British liqueur made traditionally from berries selected from the numerous blackthorn shrubs found in the country’s hedgerows. Buckingham Palacenhas confirmed that in order to make its own sloe gin, it was forced to import the berries from Eastern Europe because the UK’s fruits were not up to standard.
A spokeswoman said: “We are using whole berries, rather than from concentrate, meaning they need to be of the best quality.” She said that they would do better in a colder climate.
”The typical sloe is 1cm across, a blackthorn bush, wherever it is in the world, would produce the same sloes. It’s not like a rose which has a zillion different types. They mass produce and flash freeze them in Bulgaria. Anyone importing them can only be doing so to save money as they sell them by the ton and it’s much cheaper”, David Patrick, founder of Norfolk-based sloeberry said
A 50cl bottle of the gin, which is infused with ingredients from Buckingham Palace’s kitchen, costs £30. The RCT’s new offering, which costs £30 for a 50cl bottle, comes after the success of its own London dry gin, which sold out within eight hours of going online last summer.
The charity, which looks after the Queen’s art collection and official residences, will be aiming to make substantial sales gains as it struggles to make ends meet after the pandemic decimated its tourism revenue. In 2020-21, it is forecast to lose more than £60 million, possibly requiring a £22 million loan from Coutts.
In addition, Queen Elizabeth has launched her own beer, which is made from plants grown on her Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England.
“We’re thinking ahead to Fathers Day and what better way to celebrate than with one of our new Sandringham Beers. Sandringham Estate has developed an IPA and a Bitter from organic Laurette Barley grown on the wider Estate and is available to buy now from the Sandringham Shop.” Reads a tweet announcing the release.
There are two varieties available. The first is a 4.3 percent ABV cold-filtered traditional English bitter that costs £3.99 per bottle. The second is a golden IPA with a slightly higher ABV of 5%, made with three different types of hops that combine to create a “subtle” yet “heavy” flavor.
