Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: Buckingham Palace will have an unusual tree
In London, preparations continue for the celebration of the platinum anniversary of Elizabeth II. By June, Buckingham Palace will have an installation in the form of a giant tree, consisting of 350 living trees. The trunk and branches of the structure will be made of wood and steel, and the trees will be placed in aluminum pots-nests. The height of the sculpture will be 21 meters, writes ITV News.
The author of the project is the architect and designer Thomas Heatherwick, the owner of the most prestigious awards, an honorary member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art. The tree will be made from steel surplus materials purchased exclusively from British companies to protect the environment from pollution.
The installation aims to draw attention to The Queen’s Green Canopy campaign, which planted over 1 million trees between October 2021 and March 2022. At the end of the festive events, the sculpture will be dismantled, and the trees will be handed over to community groups for subsequent planting.
