Princess Diana’s wedding dress will go on display at Kensington Palace for the first time in 25 years on June 3rd.
The gown, complete with 25ft train, will form part of an exhibit documenting royal fashion design through the ages. After her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, decided to loan it from their private collection, Diana, Princess of Wales’ famous wedding gown will be on display at Kensington Palace for the first time since her death.
The dress, which is among the most famous in bridal history, will form the centerpiece of a landmark exhibition. Royal Style in the Making will open in the newly refurbished Orangery at the Princess’s former London home on June 3.
The exhibition, which will center on the “intimate relationship between fashion designer and royal client,” will feature some of the most famous couture, including Princess Diana’s wedding gown. Diana’s wedding gown was modeled by David and Elizabeth Emanuel for her 1981 wedding to the Prince of Wales.
The wedding gown was last shown in London in 1995, when the Princess was still residing at Kensington Palace. The gown features a 25ft sequin-encrusted train, the longest in royal history, and was designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel for Lady Diana Spencer’s 1981 wedding to the Prince of Wales.
The dress was given to her brother, Earl Spencer, to look after when she died in 1997, so that it could be passed on to her sons when they turned 30, as indicated in her will. It was on display at his Althorp home in Northamptonshire, where the Princess was raised, for two months every year, and it was also loaned to numerous worldwide exhibitions. When the Duke of Sussex turned 30 in September 2014, the dress was inherited by the brothers and added to their private collection.
On July 1, which would have been their mother’s 60th birthday, both Princes William and Harry will be reunited at Kensington Palace for the unveiling of a statue of their mother.
Matthew Storey, exhibition curator at Historic Royal Palaces, said: “Our summer exhibition at Kensington Palace will shine a spotlight on some of the greatest talents of British design, whose work has been instrumental in shaping the visual identity of the royal family across the 20th century.
“While one of the highlights will undoubtedly be Diana, Princess of Wales’s show-stopping Emanuel-designed wedding dresses – which goes on show at the palace for the first time in 25 years – we’ve got some real surprises up our sleeve for fashion fans.”
