As passenger numbers continue to rise, London City is on target to surpass 3 million by the end of the year.
The Newham airport said today that 640,000 passengers passed through its gates in June and July, with another 300,000 expected in August.
“We made a concerted effort with our airlines this summer to attract more leisure routes and passengers, and the fact that we were able to reach close to 1 million passengers for the period is testament to the resilience of our operation and the quality of the passenger experience we provide,” said chief executive Robert Sinclair.
The recent transport mayhem had no effect on London City, which claims to get travellers from the DLR to their gate in less than 25 minutes.
Nonetheless, the airport advised travellers to arrive two hours ahead of time to guarantee a smooth operation.
The airport made headlines lately when it announced a 10-week survey on its proposal to raise passenger capacity to 9 million by 2031.
So far this summer, passenger counts at London City Airport have returned to about 70% of pre-Covid levels. In June and July, the airport serviced 640,000 people, keeping it “on track” to exceed three million annual passengers by the end of the year. In instance, London City handled a record 5.1 million passengers in 2019, before dropping to 905,000 in 2020 and 714,000 in 2021 owing to the pandemic’s impact on travel.
London City maintained that its short-haul schedule will “run as planned” in August, despite the fact that other major London airports, such as Heathrow and Gatwick, had to limit capacity owing to a staff shortage. This month, the airport anticipates more than 300,000 passengers.
The important business destinations of Amsterdam, Edinburgh, and Zurich remain London City’s top routes, despite the airport’s goal of attracting more leisure-oriented routes, which has resulted in considerable demand for additional flights to Ibiza, Florence, Palma, Nice, and Malaga.
Sun Air’s flights to Billund, Denmark, home of Lego, will begin operation on September 5th, with six trips each week.
