UK Department of Transport is considering making mandatory criminal background checks for chauffeurs.

This legislation, intended to reduce harassment and violence against women, might be implemented within the next three years. According to a study commissioned by the Ministry, 49% of British women do not feel safe in public transport, and 46% have witnessed verbal aggression against another woman. At the same time, the UK loses 3.7% of GDP annually due to the fact that women are afraid to get a job that will require them to use public transport.
“Our transportation system needs to work for the benefit of the entire population, including the most vulnerable groups,” said Junior Transportation Secretary Trudy Harrison.

As a solution to the problem, experts recommend using the data of the Disclosure & Barring Service, which allows employers to check applicants for criminal records and other warnings and prohibitions issued by the court.
“This will help to promote safeguarding practices and improve trust among our customers and employees in the transportation business.” This is especially crucial on services with fewer people on board, such as in the evenings or when more vulnerable clients are traveling, according to the research.
