From August 25 to September 15, Banksy’s work is on display at the new Red Eight Gallery at the Royal Exchange, writes City A.M. The total cost of the exhibits is estimated at 5 million pounds.
The first work that greets visitors is “Morons”, depicting an auction room with the caption “I can’t believe you idiots are buying this crap.” Nearby is a reproduction of Girl with a Balloon (renamed Love in a Trash Can in 2018), one of the artist’s most famous paintings; its price, according to expectations, can reach 200 thousand pounds.
The highlight of the exhibition, and the only original, is Laugh Now, a painting depicting a gorilla wearing an apron that reads, “Laugh now, but one day we’ll be in charge.” It is assumed that in the event of a sale, this work could bring more than 4 million pounds. “Locals have the money to buy Banksy, Harland Miller and Damien Hirst, but they may not want to go to Mayfair,” says curator Sean North. “We want to settle right on their doorstep.”
The cost of Banksy’s work has risen markedly over the past fifteen years. Souvenirs that sold for £10 at Dismaland in 2015 are now going under the hammer for £15,000, while items from the artist’s GDP Shop are valued at more than £160,000.
