American & Virgin airlines Celebrate 30 Years Of Serving London Heathrow

July 1st, 1991 marks exactly 30 years since two major transatlantic carriers first began flying from London Heathrow. Virgin Atlantic, founded by Sir Richard Branson, launched its first flight from London’s main airport. American Airlines relocated from London Gatwick to Heathrow on the same day.
The London Air Traffic Distribution Rules have limited which airports airlines may service in the London region since 1978. Some airlines, like Virgin Atlantic, were denied entrance to London Heathrow as a result of this. When these restrictions were lifted in 1991, London Heathrow Airport became a viable alternative for a greater number of airlines.

Since 1982, American Airlines has operated flights to and from London. From its founding until 2008, the airline flew to London Gatwick Airport. However, the airline began flying to London’s major Heathrow Airport on July 1, 1991. For the first trip, a Boeing 767 aircraft traveled from JFK Airport in New York to the home of its current partner, British Airways.
The London airport now offers several services from the American carrier, with up to 10 daily flights available this summer. From Boston, Charlotte, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, and Seattle, Boeing 777 planes will fly to Heathrow.
The airline’s complete schedule includes up to 23 daily flights to 11 different locations around the United States. Last year, the airline chose to move in with its joint business partner, British Airways, at Terminal 5 to make things a bit cozier.
When it comes to cargo services, Heathrow is also a significant airport for American Airlines. Since the beginning of the current situation, the airline has conducted over 1,460 cargo-only flights. Every day, the aircraft transports about 250,000 kilos of freight, ranging from fish and medical supplies to produce and mail.

Prior to this, the plane operated with Qantas for 57,391 hours and 18,067 flight cycles, averaging 03h11m each cycle, starting in October 1974. Virgin Atlantic flew the plane for a total of 46,256 hours during just 6,320 flight cycles, with an average trip time of 07h19m. Virgin retained control of the airline until July 2001.
Heathrow will become increasingly important for British long-haul carriers in the future years. Virgin said a year ago that it will be leaving London Gatwick, where it has been based since its founding. While it is possible that it may return in the future, Heathrow will continue to serve as the airline’s principal airport for the time being.
